A British gold coin in circulation between 1663 and 1816.
Its nominal value as of 1717 was 21 shillings or one pound sterling and one shilling. Depending on the gold price, the value of the guinea rose as high as 27 shillings. The guinea was replaced in 1816 by the sovereign.
