The Academy of Swiss Natural Sciences was founded as a society of learned men.

Johann Conrad Fischer joined the society in 1817 and became friends with numerous natural scientists of his time. In 1825, he became acquainted with the engineer Jean-Daniel Colladon at a meeting of the association in Solothurn and visited him several times at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London.
