Perkins, Bacon & Co.

1819 – 1935

Printing company of Jacob Perkins, which is known for having printed the world’s first self-adhesive stamp, the “Penny Black”.

The company, Perkins, Bacon & Co., was later taken over by Perkins’ son, Angier March Perkins, and the name and address changed several times thereafter.

  • Dec. 1819: founded as Perkins, Fairman & Heath
  • 1820: located at 69 Fleet Street
  • 1822: name changed to Perkins & Heath, later to Perkins & Bacon
  • 1834: name changed to Perkins, Bacon & Petch
  • 1852: name changed to Perkins Bacon & Co.
