Swiss industrialist, politician, social pioneer and architect.

Hans Caspar Escher founded the company Escher, Wyss & Cie. in Zurich in 1805 together with the banker Salomon von Wyss under the name Baumwollspinnerei Escher Wyss & Co. The company soon focused all its activities on the design and construction of machines of all types, later including locomotives and steamships.
