Pilâtre de Rozier, Jean-François

30. March 1754 – 15. June 1785

A French aviation pioneer and the pilot of the first manned flight in history.

In 1785 Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier took off in his balloon to fly over the English Channel to England. The undertaking failed soon after Pilâtre de Rozier started and he was killed when the balloon crashed. His grave is located in Wimille near Wimereux.
