Fairbairn, William

A Scottish engineer and inventor; he helped pioneer bridge design and the testing of iron for its applications, suitability and quality.

William Fairbairn owned a factory in London and Manchester, trading under the name William Fairbairn and Sons, which specialised in shipbuilding. As a friend of Fairbairn, Johann Conrad Fischer often visited this shipyard during his visits in England.
