breechloader (firearm)

method, process, technology

A mechanism for loading and firing the projectile and propellant via the rear (breech) end of the barrel; developed in the 19th century.

The breechloader required a higher quality of the material used and of the sealing mechanism. Samuel Johann Pauli was a pioneer in this technology and he received a patent for it in 1812.
