refining

method, process, technology

A process in iron-working in which pig iron reduced in a blast furnace is smelted in a refining furnace in order to separate the silicon slag from the iron.

Refining is basically a form of fining. The process which Johann Conrad Fischer observed in the Gibbon ironworks is actually a preparatory step.
