percussion lock

method, process, technology

An ignition device for firearms in the 19th century, in which a hammer is released, which then strikes the percussion cap to fire the shot.

The percussion lock was an important innovation over the flintlock used until then. The percussion lock principle was developed by Jean Lepage in Paris in 1807–1810.
